Bone boffins find remains of ancient tuna dinner

Bone-bothering boffins have discovered that a man's taste for tuna sarnies have developed much earlier than previously thought.

Archaeologists find 42,000-year-old bones of tuna and sharks in the cave near the East Timorese in Australia, providing strong evidence that people back then were deep-sea fishing, according to their findings, published in Science.

For the early boats were made of wood and the other not-very-long-term thing, it's tough to predict the researchers determined how early people were out shopping for a sushi Earth's seas.

The fact that people lived on these islands as far back as 45,000 years ago, is proof they had some method of crossing the ocean, but if they could actually get around a boat, or they simply drifted with the tide until they found land hot topic again in a historic debate.

"What a site in East Timor has shown us that early modern people in Island Southeast Asia was amazingly advanced maritime skills. They were expert in catching fish species that would be difficult even today - fish such as tuna. This is a very exciting finding," the top bone in botherer Professor Sue O'Connor of the Australian National University, said the statement preserved.

He said that scientists could not be sure exactly how these people were hauling their catch, but it was clear that they were fishing off the land.

"Tuna purse seines can get into the driver or networks, or by using hooks and trolling. Simple as fish aggregating devices tethered logs can also be used to attract them. So they could be caught by hooks or nets. In either case, it seems certain that these people were using quite sophisticated technology and fishing vessels on the high seas, "he added.

But this discovery has led to some of the history boffins digging the consensus.

The archaeologist James O'Connell of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, which already supports the idea that deep-sea fishing permit began between 45,000 and 50,000 years ago, told Science that the new evidence "solidifies the case."

But William Keegan, an anthropologist at Florida Museum of Natural History, said that the tuna had been relatively small, and this may mean that they were young 'uns caught near the shore.

And Geoff Bailey, an archaeologist at the University of York in Britain, argued that East Timor and other islands of the offshore area is very steep topography, which means that the deeper the water is actually very close to the land.
