Green Tribunal seeks govt response on plea on Western Ghats

New Delhi: The National Green Tribunal has already sought the response of the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) on an appeal against the grant of any authorization for any new project in an ecologically sensitive Western Ghats.

The court also issued notices to the governments of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa, Kerala, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu seeking their responses on the plea for implementation of the Report of the Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel (WGEEP) on the protection and preservation of the Western Ghats.

The plea of two NGOs, Goa Foundation and Peaceful Society, told the court that the MoEF set up the WGEEP in March 2010, given the environmental sensitivity and ecological importance of the region.

The WGEEP in his report to MoEF dated August 31, 2011 has already indicated the entire Western Ghats as Ecologically Sensitive Area and categorized the entire region into three classes according to their environmental sensitivities.

The NGOs sought to restrain the authorities from granting a recent nods to projects in regions in the first two categories that include 97 talukas in 44 districts of six states.

The WGEEP was in its report recommended that no mining should be allowed in the Western Ghats in Goa.

For mining activities in other areas in two categories, WGEEP recommended that no new licenses should be given and where there is mining, it must be eliminated in five years, from 2016.
