New Delhi: Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can play an important role in combating climate change by encouraging the adoption of green practices, experts said Thursday.
"ICT can help to combat climate change by encouraging the adoption of green practices and to develop more energy-efficient devices, applications and networks. ICT can be a key factor that can promote economic growth, low carbon economy," said RK Pachauri, Director-General Energy and Resources Institute (Teri).
He was speaking after the release of the report "Sustainable Tomorrow: The EU's information and communications technology, the potential" of the joint efforts of Teri Business Council for Sustainable Development (BCSD) and the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM).
"The report is a step forward with the rapid growth of the ICT sector makes it essential that the future will need to drive the energy efficient way," he added.
Experts participating in the event said that the ICT sector is an adaptable energy-efficient practices, such as energy efficient cooling, a green data centers and e-waste disposal.
Meanwhile, NASSCOM President Som Mittal said that the report recognizes the potential of the ICT sector in a more effective tool to combat climate change.
The report highlights the role of ICT in reducing energy demand in India, encouraging activities that promote a healthier environment without hampering economic growth, he added.
