French silent film The Artist and a period film Hugh became the big winners at the star-studded 84 Academy Awards ceremony here as they walked away with five honors each. The artist was named the best picture and also won the best actor and best director trophy for Jean Dujardin and Michel Hazanavicius respectively.

The artist, black and white film about silent film star who fears his downfall after the arrival of the talkies, also won the best costume and best original score category. The film is said to be the second silent movie ever won an Oscar - the first being a 1927 film Wings, which was awarded in the first Academy Awards in 1929.

Hugo, directed by Martin Scorsese, won more in the techical categories. Set in 1930 Paris, it is a 3D adventure drama about a boy involved in the mystery of his father's death and automaton. The film took the honors in the best cinematography, best art direction, best sound editing, best sound mixing and visual effects categories.

Veteran actress Meryl Streep received her third Oscar in the glittering ceremony at the Kodak Theatre here Sunday night. She won the award for best actress for her portrayal of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, which won the Best Makeup award too.

American actress Octavia Spencer was in tears as she received the Best Actress trophy for Reliance DreamWorks' The Help, in which she tried to play the role of big mouth maid named Minny. The best actor in a supporting role award went to Christopher Plummer for The Beginners. At at 82, he is said to be the oldest winner of the golden statuette.

Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash was awarded for the best adapted screenplay for The Descendants, which has been translated to screen by Kaui Hart Hemmings' eponymous novel, while Woody Allen won the best original screenplay for a romantic comedy Midnight in Paris.

Rank, a film about chameleon, has been named the best animated film, and The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr.Morris Lessmore away the most animated short trophy at the awards gala.

The best foreign film award was given to an Iranian film A Division, which also won the Golden Globe trophy in the same category this year. India official entry in the category - Malayalam film Adaminte Makan Abu, not even to make it to the top nine shortlist.

Pakistani documentary Saving Face, who discovered the story of hundreds of people, mostly women who have become acid attack victims, received the best documentary (short) title, while undefeated won the award in the Best Documentary (feature) category.

The Oscar original song went to Man and Muppets from The Muppets. The number was made up of Bret McKenzie.

The best film editing award was bagged by Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall for David Fincher The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and the most direct action short film went to The Shore.
