Indian control of air pollution among the bottom 10 countries, according to 2012 Environmental Performance Index (EPI), which is aimed at pollution control and resource management challenges.
Two of the fastest growing economies in the world - India and China - the 125th rank poorly and 116 one position. Both countries suffer from unhealthy air.
In a study conducted by Yale University's Center for Environmental Law and Policy and Columbia University, ranks 132 countries 22nd performance indicators in the 10 policy categories: environmental health, water (effects on human health), air pollution (effects on human health) effects of air pollution (effects on ecosystems), water (ecosystem effects), biodiversity and habitat, forestry, fisheries, agriculture and climate change.
Switzerland (with a score of 76.69 EPI) is a world leader in dealing with pollution control and resource management challenges. In its 2012 ranking of the EPI is primarily due to its high performance air pollution control. Latvia (70.37), Norway (69.92), Luxembourg (69.2) and Costa Rica (69.03) round out the top five positions in 2012, EPI.
The results show that it is possible that some middle-income countries such as Latvia (GDP of $ 12.938), and Costa Rica (GDP of $ 10.238), in order to achieve impressive environmental results. This suggests that income alone is not the sole determinant of its environmental impact - the policy options and good governance is important.
At the low end of the 2012 EPI rankings is South Africa (34.55), Kazakhstan (32.94), Uzbekistan (32.24), Turkmenistan (31.75) and Iraq (25.32). These countries have significant water shortages and sustainability challenges of the last three are also known for poor governance.
