Largest Solar Radiation Storm in Six Years Headed Toward Earth

The Earth is bombarded by radiation from the sun today, the strongest storm in six years, and have limited electrical power grids and satellites, officials said.

Coronal mass ejection, violent release of plasma and magnetic field from the sun, is hurtling toward the Earth 4 million miles per hour, and should hit about 9:00 New York time, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration.

"Last time we had a storm this strong radiation in May 2005," said Doug Biesecker, physicist at NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado. "This is really the reason why this event is spectacular - it's just been so long since we've seen it."

Ejection will result in geomagnetic storms, which can be reached at G3, or "strong" ranking. While radiation can feel the power grid and communications satellites in the system Earth, scientists hope to little practical effect, Biesecker said.
