Marine surveys record 'brainless fish' off Orkney

Scotland's largest horse mussel beds and the "faceless and brainless' creature like fish captured during the government-backed research this year.

The work covered nearly 2,200 square miles - an area equal to one and a quarter times the Cairngorms National Park.

The Scottish Executive has made a major survey finds.

WWF Scotland, said the results underlined the need to better protect the marine environment.

Scottish Natural Heritage and the Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh were among the organizations that carried out the work.

Underwater video was shot and acoustic surveys and 3D images were used.

Marine vessels in Scotland, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and the Northern Lighthouse Board were also involved.

Several rare species were recorded.

On the West Coast, fan mussels were found. Growing up to 48cm long, Scotland's largest sea shell mussels.

Approximately 100 individuals over the small island of marine life was observed.

Off Tankerness of Orkney, the government said the prehistoric "faceless and brainless" is registered in the amphioxus.

Rare species was regarded as a modern representative of the first animals developed backbones, the Scottish government said.

With the nerve cord for it back, the fish has not been clearly defined face or brain.

The biggest horse mussel beds in Scotland was recorded near the Caithness Noss head.

Molluscs stabilize the sea bottom, which in turn provides habitat for other species and can live for up to 50 years.

Other finds in the flame shell beds in Loch Linnhe in Argyll and new communities in North feather star off the Sound of Canna.

Environment Secretary Richard LOCHHEAD finds described as "weird and wonderful."

He added: "The waters around Scotland is rich in biodiversity, both fascinating and it is our duty to protect this fragile environment.

"Therefore, we have ramped up our plans for the marine survey work with further studies in 2012 to further their knowledge of Scotland's seas lies beneath."

Susan Davies, director of policy and advice in Scotland, Scottish Natural Heritage said the seas were "fantastic asset".

He added: "The survey findings will help us to manage them sustainably, and to ensure that future generations can enjoy a healthy and diverse marine environment."

WWF Scotland have a policy Dr Dan Barlow, said studies had confirmed that the seas and coastal areas provided important wildlife habitats.

He said: "From helping to inform the appropriate deployment of renewable marine-related support to roll out a network of marine protected areas, these survey results will prove invaluable in helping to ensure the restoration of Scotland's seas.

"It is important that the government relies on the work of this study further our understanding of the marine environment."
